Being home from college for the summer is different for me than it is for most kids. Some of my friends go to local Colleges and Universities in the area, but I go to school 2 hours away. They have summer jobs, pool parties, beach vacations, lots of time with friends and lots of fun summer adventures. Most of my summer consists of making hay, feeding animals, and mowing grass. I live on a 160 acre beef cattle farm in Maryland with my Mom, Dad, two sisters (Tanner (18) and Addie (7)) and my great aunt. Let me tell you, my house is an adventure in itself.

My family does EVERYTHING together. We attend cattle shows, rodeos, sports tournaments, fairs, carnivals, amusement parks, restaurants, and just about everything else, together. Being away from them for over ¾ of the year makes me miss them a lot, so when I get home for the summer I spend all the time I can with them. My youngest sister is 7 now and going on 16 it feels like sometimes. Being able to create memories with her and watch her grow and learn is so important to me. Sometimes I feel like I miss out while I’m at school, but I try to make it up whenever I’m home.

Things can get a little busy on the farm. Feeding animals twice a day, making hay, mowing grass are all just daily things that need to be done. The best is when the cows get out from their field, now that’s an adventure. Working together on the farm is a must. There are many tasks that require at least 2 people. No one works better together than me and my sister Tanner. Since we are so close in age, we have done everything side by side for as long as I can remember. We can do just about anything, but with all that time spent together, comes a lot of arguments. We sure do fight like sisters, but the farm and the family needs us to work together so we have learned to put our fight on the back burner until all the work is done.

Even with all the work we do in the summer, we still get to do a lot of fun things as a family. My favorites are pool days at Grandma’s house, Baseball games, Bar-B-Qs, and crab feasts. These days are the best because it’s a time to just relax and spend time with the people I love most.

These small adventures are just as important to me as the big ones. Being able to spend this time with the people that mean the most to me is the best feeling in the world. Not everyone is able to spend as much time with their family as they would like, so I challenge you to spend a day with your family on a small adventure and just enjoy their company.
